The open secrets of a small Wisconsin town greet prodigal son John Schmidt, "returning" to a hometown he's never seen. He discovers unlikely mysteries, crimes and raw passions unbelievable to many Americans but commonplace to hundreds of Midwestern villages. This moving novel is a rich, multi-layered tale by an author who has mastered several genres already in a dozen other books and here immerses us in a Midwestern milieu we thought we knew. We do now! Visiting Schmidt's Mill is an experience bordering on the gothic, in a setting of surpassing beauty. "A wonderful and memorable read," say the reviews.

There are not too many books I savor and wish wouldn't end, but this was one. The weather descriptions I heard from my father as he prepared to work in the fields, the description of the wake which had me peeping over the casket of my grandfather, and the woes of a small town were spot on. It's a wonderful tale, but the ending may startle you. I have read many of Richard's books, but this is my favorite! Another book he authored, Traveling From My Desk, is non fiction, but very good. I plan on buying several copies of Schmidt's Mill for my family for Christmas. It will bring smiles to their faces as they recall our upbringing in a small town, and the characters we all know so well.Product details

Schmidt Mill Richard E Peck 9780972630856 Books Reviews
Schmidt's Mill is an outstanding novel. It held my attention all the way through. The characters are fascinating, and the book gave me a good idea of what life is like in rural America. I recommend the book for anyone who likes a well-written story.
Let me begin by saying, I loved the other five Peck books I have read.
My opinion of this one is far from love. It was dark and moody. The story was strained and lacked believability. it was just strange, and not in a good way.
I feel cheated of the time I spent reading this book.
I was fascinated with Schmidt's Mill and couldn't put it down until finished. The characterization of people in a small Wisconsin town was the highlight to me. This could only be written by someone who had experienced this culture first hand. If you were raised in a small town in the midwest, this is a must read. The story itself is convoluted and clever and it only comes together in the last two chapters. Highly recommended....now I'm ready for his next novel.
I had read The Teacher's Funeral, also by Peck, and liked it a lot, so thought anything he wrote would be as good, but I was very disappointed with this book.
